Facebook has been around for over a decade and ranks as the largest social media platform in the world. Its user base consists of 1.71 billion active users as of July 2016 and 47% of those users access it through a mobile. Even if you don’t use Facebook yourself, chances are you know someone who does. This platform provides a vast range of services, from something as simple as keeping in touch with friends, to games, latest news or even promoting your business.
Considering the fact that this social media platform has been around for a long time, there are still many hacks even pro Facebook users might not know about.
So get ready to take notes and enrich your Facebook life even more.
1. Blocking Games and Facebook App Requests
As you may already know Facebook has a lot of games available and quite often you receive unsolicited requests either sent by friends or it’s sent automatically by the apps. Most often than not these requests are annoying and you want to get rid of them but you don’t know how. Not to worry, there are two methods you can use to get rid of them once and for all.
The First Method – Blocking the Requests
Go to the top right corner of your page and click on the little triangle there.
Once you’re there go to Settings. On the left you will see an option of Blocking. Click on it and there will be many blocking options provided. You can either block the app itself or the person that sends you the most apps.
If for some reason you don’t feel like going through all the hassle of the first method, here is another one that’s a bit easier.
Go to the Games App Center that’s located on the left side of your home page. You have to click on Games under the Apps section as shown on the picture below.
Once you’re there go to the Activity, it’s on the top right next to ‘Find Games’. In that section you’ll see all the invites you have from your friends. To get rid of them, simply click on the ‘Ignore All’ or the X button to deny the request.
2. Read Messages without Others Seeing It
As you may have noticed there is a ‘SEEN’ mark now on Facebook when you read a message, so the other person knows that you received it. It’s a feature that’s both helpful and harmful at the same time. There are times when you don’t want others to know that you’ve read their message, but you still want to know what it was about. Don’t worry there are ways around it. You can simply install a Chrome extension called Facebook UnSeen, this app will do all the work for you.
3. Change Your Profile Picture to a GIF
You might have stumbled upon a few profiles with animated pictures before and if you ever wondered how they did it then keep reading. To change your regular profile picture to an animated one is quite an easy task thanks to Facebook. All you have to do is access the Facebook page through your mobile, click on your profile picture and there will be an option ‘Take a New Profile Video’. Selecting that option will allow you to record a video of yourself. Now that you know this simple secret, go have fun with your profile picture.
4. Recovering Deleted Messages on Facebook
Sometimes the number of messages grows so much that at some point you just delete a bulk of messages without really going through them. Then the moment of realization comes that you deleted something important. If you have ever been in a situation where you urgently needed to retrieve some old message or simply a message you have deleted, then this tip is for you.
You may or you may not have known this fact, but Facebook actually saves all the data in its archives. So even when you think your messages are gone, they’re quietly sitting somewhere in those archives. All you have to do is retrieve it.
Go to your Settings -> General and there at the bottom you will see ‘Download a copy of your Facebook data’. Click on it and it will redirect you to a new window. There you will be presented with an option ‘Start My Archive’. Once you press on it, Facebook will automatically gather the data and send it to your email.
To download your data all you have to do is click again on ‘Download a copy of your Facebook data’ and it will open this window. Click on ‘Download Archive’ and there you go. It’s easy as that. So next time if you think you lost some of your important messages, don’t worry they’re all safe.
5. Facebook Videos with No Software
Facebook has tons of amazing videos and useful tutorials. There is a general video downloader called the Internet Download Manager (IDM) that allows you to download videos from YouTube and many other video sharing platforms. However, Facebook doesn’t support it, so you can’t download any videos using that app. If you don’t want to bother with downloading whole new software but you still want to download videos from Facebook, you have nothing to worry about. There is a way to do it without going through all the hassle. The answer is simple. Use online video downloaders.
Go to the video you’d like to download and copy the URL of that video as shown in the picture below.
Next step is to open an online video download service such as downvids.com or en.savefrom.net
I will explain how to download a video using downvids.com
Insert the URL link in the box and press ‘Get Video’. Once the video loads, just click on ‘Download Video’ and you’re all set. No more worrying about installing new apps to download videos, just a few clicks and you’ll do it yourself.
6. Switch off Video Auto-Play
Have you ever been in the position when you just want to scroll down the news feed in peace and quiet to see what’s happening and instead some video starts playing loudly and you don’t know where it’s coming from? You have a solution on your hands. Turn off the automatic video player and play the videos only when you’re interested in them. To do that just follow these simple steps and enjoy your peaceful time on Facebook.
Go to your Settings and on the bottom left corner you will see ‘Videos’. Click on it and in the ‘Auto-Play Videos’ section you’ll be able to choose from Default – On – Off. If however, you’re using your phone and you’d like to change the settings, the process will be slightly different.
Mobile App Version
Go to your Settings -> Videos and Photos. There you’ll see ‘Autoplay’ and you will have three options; Cellular and Wi-Fi, on Wi-Fi connections Only or Never. Pick anyone you prefer and enjoy.
7. Log Out From Any Remote Places
Quite often people overlook the importance of “forgetting” or logging out from the previous locations they’ve logged in at. Facebook remembers any new devices you log in from. If you don’t want to run the risk of being hacked, it’s better to manually “forget” those devices. Nowadays the trust level is so low especially regarding the social media platforms. It’s better to protect your in advance than deal with the consequences later.
If you’re using your desktop
Here’s a simple way to delete any previous devices you’ve used to log in. Go to your Settings -> Security. There you will see a section called ‘Where You’re Logged In’. Click on it and you’ll see all the active sessions and end any of the ones you’re not using on a regular base.
If you’re using your mobile app
Go to your Settings -> Account Settings -> Security. Once you’re there click on ‘Active Sessions’. There you will see all the sessions that are currently active and all you have to do is click on that X to delete any of the ones you are not using on a daily basis.
8. Turn Off Notifications
We’ve all experienced times when Facebook can be a handful. There are so many notifications coming that you can hardly catch up with them. Sometimes we all need a break and this is when turning off the notifications comes in handy. This simple trick allows you to do exactly that.
If you’re using your desktop
